Andes House

This 2,000 square foot three-bedroom house in the Catskill Mountains of Upstate New York is sited near the center of a 48 acre former dairy farm. The single-story house’s massing hugs the undulating landscape, cascading down the hillside in three levels, articulating public and private spaces with the level changes. Oriented to take advantage of winter sun and spectacular valley views, the slender building also bends in plan to conform to the site topography and further delineate public and private areas. Family functions – cooking, eating, socializing – separate the secondary bedrooms, one of which doubles as a drum studio and the other a writing office. All spaces are linked by direct access to a long, trellised porch that bridges the south facing façades and provides solar control and an expansive outdoor room from which to enjoy the landscape.
